Happiness is our nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside - Ramana Maharshi

Q & A: Horrible dreams at night: Mind is cause of bad dreams

I am Swami Samarth devotee. I have received blessings from PP Shri Datta Kavishwar Maharaj. I am regular in Lord Ganesha and Swami Samarth Pooja. I am regular in touch with meditation. Several occasion I observed that I am visiting only in holy places and am in touch with good people.

Every day at night I see horrible dreams. All types of mixed dreams. When am I going to get rid of these obstacles?

I am worried about my entire joint family system. As you are aware joint family system in India and religious samskaras are under downward trends. Every family is suffering and leading towards downfall of Hindu culture. How to save each family life? To avoid clashes, fighting, in families what we can do?

M Khurana (Name changed), India

It is great to know you have blessings of PP Shri Datta Kavishwar Maharaj I would call you one of the rare fortunate ones who is blessed by a great religious authority. Only those who are fortunate to seek God are lucky enough to get blessings from Adhikari (authorized and supreme) Guru. It is also good that you are doing Swami Bhakti (devotion) and Pooja.

First about the “Every day at night I see horrible dreams”.

Let us first analyze cause of the dreams

Mind: The cause of dreams

There are 3 states we live in - Waking, Dream and Deep sleep states - all these states are the products of our mind. During waking our mind is in a gross state when it enjoys sensual objects. It is in subconscious state when it functions in dream. Mind is in a causal state during deep sleep.

The mental processes are not limited to the field of consciousness alone. The mind functions at an unimaginable speed. There are numerous storage cells in the subconscious mind where various things are recorded in a perfect order. Only 10% of the mental activities occur in the field of consciousness while 90% activities occur in subconscious mind. Messages come out from the subconscious mind to surface on the conscious mind.

Our mind creates the dream out of the events and imagination of experiences in the waking state. The dreams in the dream state are creation of subconscious mind which is creation of our past Samskaras (impressions). There is subtle working of the mind in the dream. It is generally the subtle desires that are enjoyed in the dreams. There are also the subtle fears that are hidden in the subtle mind that surface through dreams. The dream spring up from the layer of Samskaras or impressions in the subconscious mind.

The horrible dreams you get are because of layer of fears in your subconscious mind. Once you understand the cause of your bad dreams you can work towards a solution. Through regular meditation you can purify the subconscious mind and control thoughts and memories. The fire of meditation can burn bad thoughts. It is not easy but it is possible. Fortunately you have blessings of great Guru like PP Shri Datta Kavishwar Maharaj, you also have Swami Samarth behind you. So it will be relatively simple for you to get rid of those bad dreams with the help of regular meditation. Meditation works as an antidote that gets rid of poisonous thoughts (which are extremely common for most of the people). Meditation will act like fire and can destroy bad thoughts and memories in the subconscious mind over the period of time. Don’t get troubled by the dreams, be an observer. They will die eventually.

Another important tool for you to get rid of dreams is to do Japa (repetition of God's name). Japa Yoga is one of the easiest and quickest Yoga to attain Realization. Japa must become a habit. Seva at Swami Samarth Math (temple) is another useful effort to eventually get rid of bad dreams.

Another possible cause for dreams: Organic disturbances and indigestion

There is another possible cause for dreams. Its physical - indigestion can also cause dreams. The medical view is that dreams are due to organic disturbances somewhere in the body. Regular exercise may help if this is the cause.

You need not worry about downfall of Hindu culture or Hinduism

About your other questions on downfall of the Hindu culture and Hinduism in India – “joint family system. As you are aware joint family system in India and religious samskaras are under downward trends. Every family is suffering and leading towards downfall of Hindu culture”

It is not your job to worry about these things. The fact is everything happens with the “Will” of the God. If families are suffering, that is because of their collective Karma. God has given them absolute freedom to create their future, that is what they should do, which they will not. So you have no right to be worried about others. You worrying about others is not going to do anything.

If you wish to change something, you can start a Hindu Samskaras Kendra (school) for kids where you can give Hindu Samskaras to future generations. But you should be aware this is a huge task. God has given you freedom. You can embark on such a task if you are serious about downfall of Hindu culture and Hinduism in particular.

In short, you can not control others, nor can you change them. You can certainly change yourself, which you should do and leave rest to the “Will” of the Divine.

The great service you can do to Hinduism is to attain Self-Realization yourself. You will do a great service to our religion if you realize the “Self” (Divine). Rest will be taken care of by the God.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

Yoga is an exact science. It aims at the harmonious development of body, mind and soul. Everyone should follow one Yoga as their primary Yoga (based on their character). Then we must combine Karma Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. This “Yoga Synthesis” will lead one to the God.
