Siddha Yoga
Siddha yoga is also called by the names: Sahaj yoga, Kundalani yoga, Shaktipat yoga, Maha yoga, Shakti yoga, Kriya yoga

Siddha yoga is one of the most powerful yogas but least commonly known or practiced. The primary reason is the need of the Siddha Guru. (at the same time: not having a Siddha guru is not the end of the life) The sage Shri Vasishtha is known to have initiated Lord Shri Rama into this path as did Lord Krishna initiate Arjuna on the battleground. Likewise, Shri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, by a mere touch, graced Swami Vivekananda with the spiritual power that eventually led him to Self-Realization. In short there is nothing new in this path. In Geeta Lord Krishna insists on Arjuna, to be a Siddha Yogi rather than becoming a Gyan yogi (pursuer of knowledge), or a karma yogi (a man performing rituals or selfless actions). Here are some important points about Suddha yoga

  • There is no other yoga or path as simple as Siddha yoga.
  • This is very powerful yoga
  • This is a fast yoga (most suitable for our current times)
  • This is the yoga where the practitioner is NOT required to do anything
  • It does not need withdrawal from the world
  • The practitioner's role is only of an observer
  • Let the Kundalini do her job
  • In fact if you do something, that is an interference.
Lets consider some examples, if you want to travel across to another city – there are several ways

  • You can walk there
  • You can go on a Bike
  • You can go by a Car
  • You can go by a Plane
Kundalini yoga or Siddha yoga is like using the Plane mode.

The Kundalini is activated through two ways - spiritual practice or spiritual transfer of energy (Grace of a Master or Guru)

The important difference between Siddha Yoga or Maha Yoga and other Yoga paths is that while followers of other approaches have to make strenuous efforts under careful direction of appropriate Gurus in order to achieve Self-Realization, followers of Maha Yoga, once Kundalini is initiated, do not need to undertake such arduous efforts.

Shaktipat: Transfer of kundalini energy
In this approach a Siddha Guru (Spiritual Master) through his grace and through sheer power of his will awakens Kundalini of his disciple. This is referred as Shakti pat (or Śaktipāta - Sanskrit word, from sakti (psychic energy) and pāta (to fall) refers in Hinduism to conferring of spiritual "energy" upon one person by another.) Shaktipat can be transmitted with a sacred word or mantra, or by a look, thought/will or touch - the last usually to the ajna chakra or third eye of the recipient. It is considered an act of grace from the Guru to deserving disciple. This transfer of energy itself initiates the awakening of kundalini.

This is like candle lighting another candle...More appropriate comparison is the story of Mythical philosopher's stone that converts Iron into Gold but this converted Gold does not have ability of the Mythical Stone.

Another example

Employing ones efforts in regular spiritual practice is like working hard and then amassing a fortune.

Awakening of Kundalini by direct transfer of energy from Guru is like being adopted by billionaire where father provides child with instant bank account balance (it is not necessary the child gets everything in his hands to spend, but he is the owner of wealth, which he starts using when father feels it appropriate)

Once Kundalini is activated after shaktipat
Sadhak (or practitioner) is connected to Prana Shakti (Chetana). Once initiated Kundalini becomes your Guru. The only part we have to do is let the things happen – DO NOT Interfere. All we need to do is to sit for meditation and let the things happen.

When Kundalini is activated its reaction can be anything from minor jerk to complete collapse of body.

Whatever practices are needed for the Sadhaka’s spiritual progress, whether Pranayam, Asanas or Raja Yoga, will happen automatically. Singing, Screaming, Crying is also possible. All these are Parnic movements called as Kriyas. The Sadhak has to let kriyas happen and keep himself in role of an observer.

Siddha yoga directs energy lengthwise around the spine, gradually neutralizing the eddies of Chitta. At the same time it strengthens the nerves in the spine and brain to receive cosmic currents of energy and consciousness (Cosmic Shakti). Therefore, Siddha yoga or yoga of divine awareness is considered the supreme yoga science.

Healing: A natural process in Siddha yoga
What happens when Kundalini is awakened? Its first and consistent job is cleanzing of our physical as well as spiritual body (Chakras) and the impressions of our past Karma. When Kundalini travels from Muladhar to Sahasradhar charka it must do the clinzing of Nadis (subtle Channels) Kundalini can not progress upwards unless its path is cleaned. This is healing. Therefore, healing is a natural byproduct of Siddha yoga.

It is also observed that as the Sadhak progresses he (or she) automatically gives up bad habits and addictions (over period of time). Their eating and sleeping habits also change for better. Health benefits of Siddha yog are just like Hath yoga benefits – more Precise in the nature that address a particular problem precisely.

Cure of deceases is not the goal but the by product of siddha yoga. At the same time deceases can erupt in the initial stages (Example: cleaning of water tank will make it extremely dirty in the initial phase)

Spreading of Kundalini in chakra area may create urges
  • There are small valves in the Sushumna Nadi – Kundalini has to tap on the valve on each charka to move to the next...If it can not pass to next one it will try to enter the area around...that will exhibit the qualities associated with the chakra where it happens.
  • Each chakra has its body parts and controlled functions. Muladhar-excretion, Swadhistan-reproduction. Spreading of Kundalini in that chakra may create those urges. There is nothing wrong in it.
It is important not to get too concerned about whether one has a specific experience and not another. All these experiences are valid, and specific experiences will depend on the accumulated impressions of aspirant’s past deeds (Karma) and his receptivity to initiation (Deeksha) of Kundalini. The aspirant should just observe various experiences and enjoy those that are blissful.

What shall I Experience as a Siddha Yogi?
The fact is, not all kundalini (shaktipat) experiences are identical to those classical shaktipat awakenings experienced explained in siddha yoga, but most of the times vary in intensity and duration. Every shaktipat result varies in terms of types of experiences and intensity (starting from absolutely no experiences to extreme experiences during and after shaktipat).

Here are the details about shaktipat experiences and four stages of a Siddha yogi

Yoga is an exact science. It aims at the harmonious development of body, mind and soul. Everyone should follow one Yoga as their primary Yoga (based on their character). Then we must combine Karma Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. This “Yoga Synthesis” will lead one to the God.
